History
William Wallace Cook, wrote cheap nickel/dime novels in the late 1800s. Since he wrote so many (sometimes over one every week) he came up with a systematic way of recognizing and reusing plots. The index of abstract plot structures , which he called Master Plots, was published in a book on the method in 1928. Cook designed PLOTTO, a semi-mechanical method of combining and creating plot structures. His book was reportedly used during the heyday of movie studios, and even used by some series such as soap operas and sitcoms.
